Event Details

Location of Base for Seismic Design

Presenter: Dominic J. Kelly, P.E

Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE/SEI 7-05) refers to the base in several of the seismic provisions and defines base as “the level at which the horizontal seismic ground motions are considered to be imparted to the structure.”  This seemingly simple definition of base is often difficult to interpret for many building structures such as those on sloping sites.  Dominic Kelly will present his article titled Location of Base for Seismic Design that appears in the December 2009 issue of Structure.  Time permitting; he will also describe key changes to the seismic provisions of ASCE/SEI 7-10.
